Pro Bike Check: Eric Brunner’s Pan Am-Winning Blue Norcross Cyclocross Bike

Posted on November 10, 2022 by Jordan Villella

Eric Brunner (Blue Competition Cycles p/b Build) recently battled his way to victory at the Pan Am Championships, taking all three days of the Really Rad Festival of Cyclocross (RRFCX) in Falmouth, MA. Brunner (also the reigning US National Champion) defended his Pan Am jersey against a relentless pursuer from Curtis White (Steve Tilford Foundation Racing) and a deeply talented field.

There was already excitement in the air, with RRFCX being the last stop in the USCX series.
The last minute move of the Pan American Championships from Costa Rica to Falmouth, MA had many cross country fans making the trip to cheer on their favorite riders.

Brunner had his share of great rides this season. Still, the top step of the podium slipped away, with Vincent Baestaens (Spits CX) coming to the US for the start of the season. The course and conditions for RRFCX were tailored to Brunner’s heavy riding style and the dry conditions only amplified the matter.

Falmouths’ Really Rad Cyclocross Festive was the inaugural race weekend for newly named US National Champion Blue Norcross from Brunners. The striking color was easy to spot in the field, even easier when you were at the front of the race.

The Blue Norcross has a long history of cyclocross. Originally designed in collaboration with American cyclocross legend Jonathan Page, the bike has seen its fair share of podium finishes around the world. The newly redesigned frameset (2021) features a more serious “do it all” design, a trend we see as brands turn toward purebred cyclocross race geometry. The redesign included updated geometry, increased tire capacity, fully internal cable routing, and a lower bottom bracket. We’ve seen Brunner ride this frame to gravel and cyclocross wins. The updated gravel geolocation hasn’t stopped him.

The Brunners Norcross features a complete Dura-Ace 9200 setup with pro-exclusive 46/36 front chainrings and an 11-34T cassette. The Shimano Dura-Ace package carries over to wheels with the popular Dura-Ace C40 tubular wheels and 33mm Dugast Typhoon tires.

Unlike most in the cyclocross scene, the Brunner retains its road fit and inward-pointing shifters. Cockpit setup-wise, Brunner likes a long, narrow fit, and like Wout van Aert’s Bianchi Zolder, he opts for the Vision Metron 5D ACR Handlebar 40×120 one-piece carbon handlebar. The Vision 5D ACR handlebar works well with the Norcross internal routing and 1.5″ straight steerer.

The paint for Eric Brunners’ National Champ Blue Norcross comes from his lead mechanic, friend and co-owner of Squid Bike, Chris Namba. Chris is a master with a spray paint can, and Squid Bikes shows off his fantastic can control. Brunners’ ride is a classic colorway, with plenty of white to match his Stars and Stripes gear, along with the new Pan Am Champions jersey.

Brunner explained, “I chose this gradient design because I love simplicity and a lot of white makes the glossy black durace components and tan walls really pop.”
