Newcastle United have reportedly “laid the groundwork” to sign Shakhtar Donetsk winger Mykhaylo Mudryk in January in a deal that could be worth more than £50m.
There will be a lot of talk about the Ukraine international in the coming weeks as we prepare for the January transfer window.
Interested clubs have been given a boost of late as Shakhtar Donetsk failed to qualify for the Champions League round of 16.
Instead, they will face Ligue 1 side Rennes in a Europa League knockout round play-off in February.
Mudryk has been the star of the Ukrainian team this season. He put in a couple of brilliant performances in the Champions League group stage.
In six games, he provided three goals and two assists as his team finished third in Group F behind Real Madrid and RB Leipzig.
He has also been in great form in the Ukrainian Premier League, as he has overall 15 goal contributions in 15 appearances.
A transfer to the Premier League appears to be on the agenda in the near future. Everton had an offer for him rejected in the summer because they were unable to meet Shakhtar’s asking price.
It is understood that they want up to €70m (£61m) for their prized asset.
Arsenal were interested in him during the summer transfer window, but stopped short of making an official offer to Shakhtar.
The Londoners remain interested in Mudryk and signing a new winger is one of their priorities, either in January or next summer.
They were also linked with players of the stature of Pedro Neto and Yeremi Pino but they ended up settling for the players they have.
Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano suggested earlier this week that “the race is still wide open” for Mudryk.
“Many clubs are interested but there is no official offer yet. Let me say that Arsenal are still working on it and they are in contact on the player side.” Romano said through his YouTube channel.
“Arsenal consider Mudryk to be a great talent, so yes, they are still interested in him. They love him and follow him.
“Let’s keep an eye on this deal, but the race is still open for other clubs.”
Now soccer insider information Newcastle are reported to be ‘laying the groundwork’ to sign Mudryk ahead of Arsenal.
The club are said to be interested in signing an ‘A-list attacker’ and have been given the ‘green light’ by PIF to make a ‘box office ticket’ in January.
Mudryk is described as a “main target” and Newcastle have so far “made preliminary moves” to make the deal a reality.
A potential club record deal is on the line as the Magpies expect the 21-year-old to cost more than £50m.
However, the report notes that Newcastle face “extensive competition” and that Arsenal are also known to be admirers of the “sensation”.
