Dan Burn discusses the Kai Havertz story that caused chaotic scenes at the end of Newcastle’s win at Chelsea

An earlier dispute between Dan Burn and Kai Havertz caused the ugly scenes at the end of Newcastle United’s 1-0 win over Chelsea.

Havertz elbowed Burn in a 1-0 loss at Stamford Bridge in April and the Magpies defender savored the moment late in the game at St James’ Park. Havertz somehow avoided a red card for the incident in the spring.

Burn said after the game, “It was the thrill of the game, wasn’t it? Me and Kai had some clashes before and it’s just a part of the game. It can bring out the best in you at the time.

“But when you’re in that environment and you hang on to injury time and you want to win the game, these things happen.”

In a crazy ending, Jamaal Lascelles was also booked for finishing off Marc Cucurella, while Jason Tindall also had to split up the players after the whistle.

Looking back on the clash, Eddie Howe said: “Fortunately, Joe Willock had a great goal, but today we were committed to everything. The physical demands of that game were very high.

“I take immense pride in the consistent performance of the players. Now the challenge is to maintain and improve that.”
