England number one Jordan Pickford believes his team can “beat the best and go all the way” at the upcoming World Cup in Qatar.
Speaking in preparation for the tournament, which begins on Sunday, Pickford said England will look to “win every game” they play in a bid to win their first World Cup since 1966.
The Everton goalkeeper has capped 45 times for the Three Lions, and is set to retain the number one jersey for his third major tournament, however, he revealed that as a youngster, even playing just once for his national team was his ambition.
“Playing for England was a dream as a child, the dream of any child who loves football is to play for England and I have achieved that dream,” the Everton goalkeeper said in a preview of this winter’s main event with BBC Sounds.
“My next ambition was to be number one for England and luckily I have been number one since the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
“Now I have the chance to go to my second World Cup, they beat us in the semi-finals last time, they beat us in the Euro final, so we’ve tasted defeat and now I hope it’s our turn to go. beat the best and go all the way.”
England join Iran, the USA and Wales in Pool B, a group they top as heavy favorites to win.
However, Pickford has insisted that the Three Lions will not take anything for granted.
“It’s a tough group,” said the Everton star. “Every international team that has qualified for the World Cup has had to go through a difficult qualification process, but as England we want to win every game we play and take each game as it comes.
“Iran is our first group game, so our only focus is on them. We’re confident to go out there, top the group and go through to the next round, but you can’t look past your opponents in the group, and we’ll need to be positive and confident to get through.”
England’s opening game against Iran will take place on Monday November 21, before matches against the United States on Friday the 25th and Wales on the 29th.
