Final result of Qatar vs. Ecuador: In the opening match of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Enner Valencia shines and Tricolor dominates

World Cup hosts Qatar were humiliated by Ecuador on Sunday in the tournament’s opener when a brace from Enner Valencia lifted Gustavo Alfaro’s side to a well-deserved victory. With the victory, the South Americans lead Group A with three points (full rankings) while the hosts are in big trouble with Senegal and the Netherlands to come (complete schedule).

The match started with controversy with Ecuador finding the back of the net in a wild little sequence in the box but surprisingly VAR called an offside which looked very harsh but was supported by recently introduced automated offside technology.

But just 10 minutes later, Ecuador would finally get their first goal with a deserved penalty. Valencia was brought down in the box and coolly finished off the penalty for a 1-0 lead. He would add his second before the break with a brilliant and powerful header into the bottom left corner of the goal to almost seal the victory.

Qatar, meanwhile, showed next to nothing during their first World Cup game in their program’s history. The reigning Asian champions hardly looked like a threat to create a chance, let alone score, putting them in a difficult position to advance.

“The credit goes to the players for their attitude, for their commitment, for their form, for their intention,” Ecuador coach Gustavo Alfaro said after the game. “Because we suffered a blow when the game started when the goal was disallowed for offside.

“We’re still looking. I think they won clearly… I hope it’s the start of something special, which is what we want.”
