Marianne Vos (Jumbo-Visma) edged out Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado (Alpecin-Deceuninck) at the X20 Trofee Kortrijk Urban Cross for her first win wearing the 2022-23 cyclocross rainbow jersey.

Denise Betsema (Pauwels Sauzen Bingoal) finished third after leading the pack of her, Vos and Alvarado for the second half of the race as she looked to give qualifying time to series rival Fem Van Empel, who fell out of the cross .

“The race was fast all the time. Betsema set a really high pace, and when Alvarado came with us, I knew he was going to try something on the last lap,” Vos said afterward.

“Alvarado took a bit of advantage and I wanted to stay as close as possible to be able to fight for the win, and in the last lap I gave it my all”.

Vos played perfect for his 108th career crossover win on Saturday.

The Dutch megastar sat glued behind the wheel of Betsema in the final circuits of the race and tagged Alvarado when the Alpecin-Deceuninck driver pulled away on the final lap.

Alvarado and Vos rounded the final turn together before the long and grueling race to the finish. Vos let Alvarado lead her and dove from behind her compatriot around 50 meters to win for the first time this cross season.

“This is a real boost,” Vos said. “A win is always very nice and I am happy that I was able to ride so well today. It was a tough crossing, but it was worth it.”

Alvarado, Betsema and much of the elite cross-border field will double Saturday’s Kortrijk race with the Hulst World Cup on Sunday, although Vos is not expected to start.
