YouTube users reported that the app on iPhones and iPads stopped working around 12:30pm today, with many saying it repeatedly crashes when they try to open a video. Over 7,500 users reported problems with the app on fall detector at 3 p.m. and 75 percent of the complaints said the problems were related to the app itself.
The issues have spread internationally, affecting users in countries outside of the US, including Canada, Poland, and Sweden.
Users who were affected by the outage reported that opening the app will force it to close and crash just a few seconds after logging in, and forcing the app to close and restart or restart the device does not help.
It is not clear what is causing the problem, but the interruptions seem to be specific to iOS, according to 9to5Google. The outlet reported that it doesn’t appear to have been caused by a recent app update and that devices still running on a 17.46.4 version are currently fine.
Those who still want to access YouTube should be able to do so through the website rather than the app, but new reports suggest that the site may also have problems. One person wrote on DownDetector: “I can’t use the app, the website isn’t responding either.”
There have also been reports of similar crashes on YouTube Music and the company commented on its official Twitter page, writing: “We are aware that many of you using the YouTube app on iOS devices may be experiencing crashes. We are very sorry about this and have started working on a solution!” YouTube said it will provide updates as soon as they are available.
The most important thing for users to know is that they will probably need to download an update for the app (sometime soon…) to fix the problem.
