Netflix spoilers The swimmers ahead.
The swimmers, one of Netflix Movie Release 2022s, tells the incredibly moving and powerful story of the Mardini sisters, Syrian refugees who ended up heroically swimming in a boat for hours to bring a group of refugees to Greece. Once they arrive safely in Germany, the sisters return to their passion of swimming, and younger sister Yusra begins training for the Olympics. After the movie was released on Netflix, Yusra Mardini herself took to TikTok to react to a special scene from the movie and had an adorable reaction that made the video go viral.
In the Tik Tok, Yusra Mardini is reacting to the scene in The swimmers where Nathalie Issa, who plays Yusra, and Manal Issa, who plays her sister Sara Mardini, go to a swimming pool in Germany to convince a swimming coach to accept them so they can train for the Olympics. I don’t know about you, but I could feel her joy radiating across the screen as she watched this exciting scene in The swimmers. In the film, this moment is pivotal, and I suppose it was also a major turning point in Yusra’s life.
In a certain context, this scene takes place just after the girls arrive in Germany, after swimming in a lifeboat across the sea and walking many, many miles before reaching their final destination. During her trip, Yusra has to put her Olympics goals on the back burner because they couldn’t focus on anything other than trying to flee Syria. When they finally got to where they planned to go, they were able to take a breather and put their minds and hearts back on their passions instead of survival, and Yursa immediately went looking for a pool.
This leads Yusra, played by Issa in the film, to the German swimming coach Sven Spannerkrebs, played by Matthias Schweighöfer, whom you might recognize from the Army of Thieves Cast, and she convinces him to take her as a student. When I watched the film, this scene marked the true beginning of Yusra’s journey to the Rio Olympics and clearly showed her drive and determination, which is shown in this film and is incredibly inspiring.
Clearly, this heroic story about the movie calendar 2022 is resonating with the public as The swimmers I was in Netflix Trending List. In addition to the film’s streaming success, Yusra’s TikTok has over 11 million views and 1.4 million likes.
The story has a happy ending, this life-changing journey and interaction, along with Yusra’s hard work, landed her a spot on the IOC Refugee Olympic Team for the 2016 and 2020 games where competed in the 100m butterfly and 100m freestyle. Besides her athletic achievements, she was the youngest ever. UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador for the UN Refugee Agency in 2017.
