The latest WhatsApp update will bring custom avatars to the popular messaging app.
Android and iOS device users will be able to create their virtual 3D characters and set them as their profile picture or share them as one of 36 custom stickers.
It’s the first time WhatsApp’s parent company Meta has introduced the feature on WhatsApp, as it has rolled it out to its other platforms, Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger.
“We are bringing avatars to WhatsApp,” Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg wrote on Facebook.
“You can now use your avatar as a sticker in chats. More styles will be coming soon in all the applications”.
WhatsApp provided more details about the new feature in a blog post on Wednesday, stating that it will boost privacy and personalization.
“Your avatar is a digital version of you that can be created from billions of combinations of various hair styles, facial features, and outfits,” the post said.
“Sending an avatar is a quick and fun way to share feelings with friends and family. It can also be a great way to represent yourself without using your actual photo so you feel more private.”
Customization features include hair styles, skin tones, and clothing, while additional improvements such as lighting, shading, and textures will be introduced in later updates.
Currently it is not possible to transfer avatars created in other Meta applications to WhatsApp.
The new feature can be found within the app’s settings on a user’s profile picture.
Only people running the latest version of the app will have access to custom avatars.
