How to enable passcodes in iOS 16?

Are you good at remembering passwords? If not, what do you do to combat that complication? In most cases, people say they use a password manager, which is a very good option, but even that involves remembering the master password and putting things back in the middle.

To combat this issue, Apple introduced Passkeys for iOS 16. With this feature, users now have the option to authenticate the login process for certain apps using Face or Touch ID, without the need to remember any passwords.

The feature was announced in June 2022 at the WWDC event when Apple introduced iOS 16 and all the features that come with it. If you’re confused about passkeys and how to use them on your iOS 16-enabled device, we’ve got all the details for you.

What are access keys and how do they work?

Before we discuss the usability of access keys, let us first explain their meaning. Passcodes, as we mentioned, are a new feature introduced by Apple with iOS 16 to help authenticate the login process for some select apps without requiring a password.

Authentication can occur using Face or Touch ID on iPhones or iPads. As defined by Apple, Passkeys are cryptographic keys that help a device confirm the identity of the user in order to provide direct access to certain applications, software, tools, etc.

Access keys are executed with biometric confirmation; therefore, it involves the use of Face ID or Touch ID as we discussed in the previous section of the article.

What apps support Passkeys?

As we mentioned above, Passkeys is not available for all the apps that are available on the App Store. Given that the feature is still in its primitive stages, it’s not surprising that it supports a handful of apps at this point, including:

  • Best Buy
  • ebay
  • Dashlane
  • go daddy
  • kaya
  • NVIDIA
  • PayPal
  • WordPress etc.

These may not seem very functional and useful to many users, however, if you use any of these above-mentioned applications, we recommend that you pay close attention to them without asking any questions.

How to set up passcodes in iOS 16?

Now that you know a bit more about passkeys and their usage, the next thing to focus on is the process of setting up passkeys on your iOS 16 device.

There are two scenarios worth considering:

  • Setting up passcodes for a new account on iPhone
  • Setting up passcodes for an existing account on iPhone

Let us walk you through these two scenarios in detail:

Setting up passcodes for a new account on iPhone

  • In the login part of the app, click on Create a new account and fill in the details that are requested on the screen.
  • If the particular application supports access keys, a pop-up will ask if you want to save the access key, and then click Continue.
  • In case the app supports the passkey but the popup does not appear, we recommend that you click on the “other” section that allows authentication and then click Continue from there.

Setting up passcodes for an existing account on iPhone

  • For an account that you have already created in an app, you can authenticate the account using passkeys.
  • Log in to the app with the credentials and go to the account management section.
  • Find the password or authentication methods in the security section of the app.
  • If the app supports passcodes, you should find the options popup. Click on it and enable the access keys for the said application.

And that’s it. The process of enabling passcodes for an existing or new account in iOS 16 is not rocket science as long as you follow the steps we have mentioned in this article.
